Mac OS X, Windows and Linux/UNIX desktop managers such as Gnome and KDE have a similar purpose and, as such, similar shortcomings. This site is designed to be a source of "dos" and "don'ts" for interface designers and application developers. The main section of the site is dedicated to various specific GUI issues that can be found in many places in these systems. The second part of the site is a showroom of examples of both good and bad GUI from various popular applications.
NewsMar 21, 2007: This site is no longer being updated. However, the current contents will remain here as a repository of UI concepts and guidelines. Aug 23, 2003: I'm currently working on an article concerning the good and bad of the Mac OS X interface. I've listed and discussed some of the bad points in a weblog post. Feel free to comment on the post and/or add your own gripes using the weblog's comments system. And also, if you or someone you know would be willing to do similar articles about Gnome, KDE or Windows, let me know (again, using the weblog comments system). Thanks. Aug 18, 2003: Welcome to the new-and-improved Pixelcentric IHS. I finally got around to making a real layout for the site instead of some random slapped-together HTML. The Mail and Sherlock articles were removed as they were badly out of date. Updated versions will be coming once Mac OS X v10.3 Panther arrives with its new Mail and Sherlock. Some of the UI Reviews were updated to reflect app UI changes. A new Metaphors page was added. New sections were added to Use of Color and Internationalization. The other articles were slightly revised. |
